Parts fitting examination
SCHROTH has carried out innumerable sled tests and observed the effectiveness of various safety belt configurations and seating positions. The acquired knowledge gained by these tests has helped to establish the optimum position of belt anchorages, best possible belt geometries and optimised body wrapping for the best possible restraint effects. Our know-how ranges from pelvic restraints through three-point and harness belts right up to inflatable restraint systems. Contradictory to widely held assumption, the seats are also an important integral part of the restraint system and are taken into account within our holistic considerations. This especially applies to extreme seating positions, such as sideward directed arrangements in transport devices or in almost lying positions, such as in Formula 1 racing cars. When evaluating the customer specific safety system, we consider all components equally in order to be able to achieve the best result.

System evaluation
A system evaluation can be carried out during every project phase and provides our customer with a good possibility of recognising and assessing the reliability, user friendliness and possible risk factors of a system in due time. Depending on customer requirements, theoretical and practical analyses, such as FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), risk consideration or system evaluation with test persons are carried out. The system limits and conditions will be mutually determined together with the customer at the beginning. The evaluation result provides the basis for the applicability and reliability of a system in practice for the interaction of the components within the system limits and ultimately for the user friendliness.

Functional model construction
Various techniques are applied in functional model construction, for the determination of installation space, functional sequences and for the representation of components. We use rapid prototype models for the testing of smaller components, such as latch mechanisms. For the functional testing of belt systems, we use or construct model seats and for tasks, which require interaction between several seats, we construct a test platform with all necessary mechanical and electronic functions.

For special and new types of requirements, we design our own testing installations, for example, for the application of restraint systems for sideward directed seats or for the application of inflatable belt systems.

Driving tests and utilisation tests
One of our tasks is, for example, the development of a restraint system, of which the airbags are already integrated within the shoulder belt. It is applied in sideward directed seats. This restraint system is especially designed to suit customer requirements and additionally fulfils the statutory requirements. The integration of the restraint system within the seat is part of our responsibility within the scope of the project work.

The testing of the ergonomic requirements is performed by means of a comfort analysis with test persons of various size percentiles.

For the release of the system, we carry out a concluding sled test, which is supervised and approved by an officially recognised testing authority and the customer.
